5 Essential Makeup Brushes

When you're new to make up, it is very easy to get overwhelmed by make up brushes. Let me simplify things for you.

The picture below by Sephora shows 5 essential brushes that will meet all your make up needs (assuming you use a brush for every aspect of your makeup). Eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, foundation and powder. The brushes as shown are straightforward and doesn't require much effort to figure out how to use it

If you're not all THAT into make up and doing all its fancy "artwork" you don't even need 5 brushes. Depending on your needs, you can simplify it down to just two brushes: The shadow brush and the blush brush.

The liner brush is for the application of liquid, cream or gel eyeliner. If you're like me, who only uses pencil eyeliners, you won't need the liner brush.

The foundation brush is for the application of liquid or cream foundation. This can easily be replaced by just using your fingers.

The powder brush is a 50/50. The powder brush is usually used gently all over your face to create a nice powdery finish. I personally don't see the big difference between using a brush and a powder puff pad besides the fact that the brush feels a lot nicer on your face.

The shadow brush is for applying eyeshadow. I prefer using brushes for the application of eyeshadow because it blends so much better than if I were to use the sponge applicators that often come together with eyeshadow sets.

The blush brush is for applying the blusher. Blusher applicators that come with blushers do a BAD job of applying blush... and so does your fingers. I've seen a sales lady at Benefit apply tint (as blush) with her fingers on my friend's cheeks and didn't think that looked too good either. Blushes should be powdery, and should be applied on with a proper blush brush: tapered or round headed.

If you've got a larger set of brushes and don't know how to use it, try looking at the very informative chart below to figure out its uses. I got this chart from Pinterest and the website link is dead, so, unfortunately, I can't tell you more about it. Click on the picture for a bigger view.
